Is Wonder based on a true story Auggie? ›

Wonder is not based on a true story, but is inspired by multiple real-life events. The 2017 film was based on R.J. Palacio's 2012 novel and deals with Treacher Collins syndrome. The author's personal experience and a song from 1995 inspired the creation of the book and subsequent film.

Wonder is a 2017 American coming-of-age family comedy-drama directed by Stephen Chbosky, who co-wrote the screenplay with Steven Conrad and Jack Thorne. It is based on the 2012 novel of the same name by R. J. Palacio and stars Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, Jacob Tremblay, Mandy Patinkin, and Daveed Diggs.

The movie “Wonder,” based on the New York Times bestseller, premiered worldwide today, and although the movie is fictional, the storyline sheds light on a rare craniofacial condition affecting one in 50,000 newborns: Treacher Collins syndrome.

However, the young girl was to remain in bed, and soon lost her appetite. Some historians believe that she occupied her time reading the Bible and writing poems, and stopped eating in order to remain weak and to avoid her daily chores. Others believe this phenomenon to be the first reported case of anorexia.

Although Auggie's face and everyday experiences are imaginary, the lives of the some 600,000 individuals who have been diagnosed with a craniofacial condition in the United States are very much real – and 7-year-old Shane Vysocky and 13-year-old Emily Merrill are among them.

One of the most insightful things about the movie was the intimate look it gave into the day-to-day struggles of living with a craniofacial condition. Auggie not only lives with Treacher Collins syndrome, but he also was born with a cleft lip and palate.

Auggie has a craniofacial difference, which means he was born with a face that is different than most. He had to go through a whole bunch of surgeries to reconstruct his face, he had a breathing tube, and a tube in his stomach for eating. Auggie's mom homeschooled him because he spent so much time in the hospital.

Critics Reviews

Wonder is a well-crafted, well-intentioned movie. But it also downplays some important economic, emotional, medical, and psychological realities...it missed a chance to better represent the experiences of children who are already so widely misunderstood.

Wonder shows what it's like to be a child with a physical disability trying to fit into a society where others find it hard to see past physical appearance. School can be a particularly challenging place for children like Auggie.

The movie ends with everyone cheering Auggie as he delivers a voiceover narration (quoting the last precept Mr. Browne gave in class): "Be kind, for everyone is fighting a hard battle. And if you really want to see what people are, all you have to do is look."

The Wonder is an invented story, but what inspired it was the very real phenomenon of 'the fasting girl,' who claimed – or was said by others – to be able to live without food.

Black explained, "We liked the concept that you could play with what people think and what they're saying, or how they would like to see themselves as opposed to how the audience is seeing them." They based the show, in part, on their own childhood growing up in the suburbs.
